The Sonoran Desert can work up a strong thirst in the hardiest of baseball fans, but a couple of Diamondbacks tickets will give you access to a baseball and beer oasis. Chase Field is home to a variety of national and local beers that’ll hit the spot on a hot, sunny afternoon at Phoenix’s favorite ballpark. Wash down those peanuts and crackerjacks with one of these crisp beers at Chase Field.

If you want to get a taste of the local craft-brewing scene, look out for beers from Phoenix Ale Brewery, a neighborhood brewery that just recently started bottling in 2011. One of their available brews is the Camelback, an Indian Pale Ale that errs on the bitter side with an IPU of 60. The brewers use 2-row, victory, caramel and chocolate malts with Nugget, cluster, Willamette, Fuggle, and East Kent Goldings hop. The Camelback is definitely a great way to start your game.
Another of Phoenix Ale Brewery’s selections at Chase Field is the Watermelon Ale, a craft made with Nugget hops and 2-row, wheat and caramel malts fermented with natural watermelon flavor. Beers like these perfectly complement the perpetual summer that is Phoenix, Ariz. Unfortunately, picnics aren’t an option at Chase Field because the large grassy field is already occupied by some guys running around playing something called “baseball.”
Fretzy’s Unfiltered Pale Ale
Another Phoenix Ale Brewery craft, Fretzy’s Unfiltered Pale Ale, is a fine drink that uses 2-row, Caravienne and Biscuit malts with English ale yeast. They also use Nugget hops for bittering and whole cone cluster hops for its aroma. The beer was named after late Phoenix Ale Brewery co-founder Greg “Fretzy” Fretz, who passed away in May 2013 at the age of 44 after a tumultuous battle with cancer.
This kölsch-style beer comes from Gordan Biersch Brewing Company, a hybrid brewery and restaurant chain that specializes in German-style beers. The SommerBrau is a light-bodied beer made with a special strain of Weigenstephan kölsch yeast and Hallertau and Tettnang hops for aroma. Ultimately, this brew is 80 percent pale-malted barley and 20 percent malted wheat, giving it that “pinpoint bitterness” that beer aficionados will appreciate. There is even a little bit of residual sugar left over in the brewing process.
If you’ve got a friend in your group that has a gluten-allergy, luckily there’s a beer option for them. Redbridge, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch, is a gluten-free beer made from sorghum, a grain that is a safe alternative to wheat or barley. It has the full-bodied taste of a lager with a “moderately hopped” taste. This beer allows those with Celiac Disease or a strict gluten-free diet to enjoy a crisp, refreshing drink with everyone else.
Even though fans might find relief from the sun thanks to the retractable roof at Chase Field, they’re still bound to get thirsty at one point or another. Explore the myriad beer options located around the Diamondback’s home turf. As always, remember to drink responsibly.
